It’s always hard when you first start going out into the big wide world of digital! Once you have your website up and running what is it that you really need to include? Here are 5 things that you should include when you go live on the net!
Metadata — Metadata is basically data about your other data. Confused? Yep – well in other words, it is basically keywords for your website to show up on search engines which you need for possible clients to find you say using google. While it would look awkward to include these descriptions visibly on your website, you can use Meta tags to include the metadata so it is visible to search engines, but not visible on the consumer-facing website. This will then help Google decide if it will display your site in a search result.
Keywords — Keywords help search engines understand what your website is about so they can include your website in relevant search terms. For example, if your business is a bakery, people might want to find your company when they search for “cakes” or “local bakery.” Make sure you include all relevant keywords to your business throughout your website where possible and definitely get those keyword blogs happening.
Google Site Map — Your sitemap lets Google know which pages within your website it should look at when deciding whether your website should pop up in search engine results. Your sitemap is literal map of your website, and will tell Google which links lead to which web pages within your site (so that means the pages you have set up). You will need to sign up and verify your site with Google to create an account and you can submit to Google here.
Google My Business — This feature tells Google where your business is geographically located so they can add it to their Google Maps website. Even if your business doesn’t have a physical location, you should still create a Google My Business page because it gives customers information like your hours of operation and contact information. You can see how this works and submit your information here.
Yoast — This free tool includes premium options for more features, but you should definitely sign up for at least the free version as it is used by millions and will be beneficial for your business! Yoast is a search optimisation tool which lets you optimise keywords, preview how your business is showing up in search results and you can make sure your page is easy to understand for consumers plus loads more.
